I loved this, Zach. The Nu Nation Project helped me survive a lot. I will never forget learning about God from Black South African woman working on her graduate level educational Leadership degree at the college I attended. Its hard to justify rejecting faith when being reminded of a faith and a hope that is not a white washed sepulche, but rich with beauty and power, that comes from overcoming through suffering.
I am listening to Dr Andre Lewis New Faith church in Houston. I was raised Mennonite, and I stand in the gap for homeless, immigrants and LGBTQ with you.
It is. You gave me hope that I am not fighting Texas alone. I also appreciate Jemar Tisby. My Mennonite farmer dad lived his faith. He would stop at the black barbershop in Benton Harbor, Michigan to get a hair cut in the 80's.
There was gem of a black church seemingly hidden a few blocks off the freeway near my former home and several of us would head there after work on a Wednesday night. We'd sit in the back, trying not to call attention to ourselves or cause anyone to be uncomfortable. We all agreed...these people know how to do church! I wanted their love of Jesus and love for each other. I still can't get over my shock of how the American church has allowed Christian nationalism to take over. It almost seems like a sorcerer has performed a spell over people. But as you wrote...history is actually repeating itself. I'm going to read what you suggested, Zach.
Totally agree that the Black Church is very much in the Bonhoeffer tradition. He is a hero of mine. Christian Nationalism is distorting the gospel of Jesus and preaching something I believe Jesus would strongly reject.
I have written a Substack comparing Christian Nationalism with the teachings of Jesus, which is about to be published. I hope you find it interesting.
